Reports From California, North Carolina

A mining and reclamation project was approved by Yolo County, Calif., supervisors following a lengthy presentation, deliberation and public comment session, according to the Daily Democrat. The Teichert Shifler Mining and Reclamation project involves an application to establish a new mining operation to extract sand and gravel aggregate along lower Cache Creek. Referred to as the Teichert Shifler operation, the mining would occur on 264.1 acres of a 319.3-acre site, with other project related uses on the remaining 55 acres. The County’s Cache Creek Area Plan (CCAP), which was adopted in 1996 and updated in 2019, currently governs mining permits for seven other off-channel mining operations along lower Cache Creek which include: CEMEX, Granite Capay, Granite Esparto, Syar, Teichert Esparto, Teichert Schwarzgruber and Teichert Woodland.

A rock quarry application was dropped from the zoning board of appeals table in York County, N.C., according to WBTV News. President Jack Mitchell, the project operator of the Langum Branch Creek Quarry, said many people on the staff either tested positive for COVID-19 or were close contacts to people who did test positive so they decided to quarantine instead of going to the zoning board meeting. The Langum Branch Creek Quarry would take a 30-acre surface mining operation already there and develop into a 370-acre operation over time. Mitchell was planning to ask for a special exception rezoning from Agricultural Conservation District. If granted the rezoning and all other approvals, the mine will operating until 2094.
